The Maskwacîs Wâhkôhtowin Research Group
The Wâhkôhtowin Research Group supports the Four Nations of Maskwacîs by promoting healthy family systems through community-led programs and strength-based research. We are guided by the voices, values, and leadership of the community, with a focus on supporting families during pregnancy, infancy, and early childhood in ways that honor Nehiyaw values and knowledge.
We work alongside the community to learn and research together, creating knowledge that is meaningful and beneficial to the people of Maskwacîs. Our goal is to develop and evaluate community-owned, culturally-based strategies to support families from preconception through early childhood. This is part of our commitment to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. We are dedicated to rebuilding the foundation of the community and creating research processes that put control in the hands of the people, correct power imbalances, and strengthen community self-determination and autonomy.
Programs & Supports
Deadly Dads' Support Society
The aim of DDSS is to support Nêhiyew napewak (Cree men) during pregnancy and parenting by providing community-led, culturally-appropriate, and strengths-based support. This support is regular and consistent, helping men build stronger connections with their families and navigate challenges.
Moms’ Support and Healing Circle
The MSHC is a safe space for moms in the community to come together. It offers a place to connect with other moms, learn from Elders, and participate in cultural practices, language, and ceremonies
Community Guide & Navigator
The Community Navigator supports parents, parents-to-be, and their families by helping them find and access resources in the community. This includes support with navigating healthcare systems, connecting to cultural programs, and accessing information about pregnancy, birth, and parenting. The “Maskwacîs Community Guide” is a free resource that lists programs and supports for families across the Four Nations.
